Are Coatings Ideal for Grain Bins or Grain Silos?

So while many people typically associate coatings with roofing surfaces, they can also be used on grain bins and grain silos. In fact, they are a very popular choice for protecting these structures from the elements and extending their lifespan.

Over time, wear and tear from weather can cause leaks. This affects the quality of stored grains and potentially leading to significant financial losses if not protected.

Sometimes grain bin painters or grain silo painters are called to diagnose leaks, seal them off, and apply industrial-grade paint or coatings to protect these structures. So in addition to providing water protection, it also enhances the aesthetics of a farm.

But why would someone use coatings on grain bins or grain silos?

There are tons of advantages to using roof coatings or paint coatings for a grain bin or grain silo including:

  • Prevent water from leaking into the bin or silo
  • Preservation of grain quality
  • Structural integrity and visual enhancement
  • Reduce energy costs by reflecting sunlight and keeping the bin or silo cool (cost savings)
  • Extend the lifespan of the roof, grain silo, or grain bin

When choosing a roof coating for your grain bin or silo, it is important to select a product that is specifically designed for this type of application. It’s important to choose an applicator or contractor that has experience with proper pressure washing to remove loose or disbanded coating so the coating can adhere correctly.

The experience contractor will also know the proper thickness of application according to manufacturer’s specifications.

So to answer the original questions, you can absolutely use roof coatings on grain bin and grain silos. The only thing to remember is to hire someone who has the experience, training, and materials for application so it’s done properly.
