One of the Most Interesting Facts About Roof Coatings

When we think of roof coatings, we tend to think that it protects your roof and is a more cost effective option to replacement. One of the less talked about benefits is that roof coatings can help reduce energy costs by reflecting sunlight and keeping roofs cooler, and consequently, buildings cooler.

The range of reflectivity depends on the product but it can be upwards of 70%-90% reflectivity.  Imagine the reduced costs needed to cool the building below simply by having the right roof coating on top.

In this article by the Washington Post, installing a “cool roof” could cut energy costs by 1/3 according to the Lawrence Berkeley National Labratory- particularly in warmer climates.

In addition to protection and reflectivity, roof coatings were designed to extend the lifespan of a roof by protecting it against elements, such as rain, snow, and wind. (And obviously the damage created by UV rays.)

A study by the University of Florida found that roof coatings can extend the lifespan of a roof by up to 20 years. This depends entirely on the roof coating used, the thickness applied, and several other external factors such as climate, geography, and building elevation.

Not to mention, roof coatings actually help the appearance of a roof by covering over blemishes and inconsistencies.

Roof coatings have a lot of benefits, but energy savings may be one of the most useful and financially beneficial advantages. That is, next to the cost of simply being cheaper overall than a costly replacement. We’d be happy to give you a free inspection on your roof if you’re interested.
